It's kind of unprecedented, but we're two weeks into the MLB regular season and two star free agent pitchers are sitting at home, left sitting on the free agent market because their asking prices are still too high.
Dallas Keuchel started a career high 34 games for the Astros last year ending the season with a 12-11 record with a 3.74 ERA and 153 strike outs.
Craig Kimbrel appeared in 63 games last season for the Boston Red Sox racking up 42 saves, 96 strike outs and a 2.74 ERA.
According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Kimbrel dropped his asking price to a much more reasonable annual salary and is looking for a more manageable three-year deal. On the other hand, ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that Keuchel has changed his ask to a one-year deal.
So, let's throw it out there, should the Twins make a call and inquire on either of the pitchers' services?
Sitting right now at the top of the division with an 8-4 record, the Twins are off to a hot start. Jose Berrios is dealing, the team is fighting back in the latter innings of the games and their knocking the ball out of the ball park left and right. Could they use another arm in the bullpen or a front of the rotation starting pitcher?
You could make an argument on both sides very easily.
It was the talking point of the off season as Joe Mauer cam off the books and the team didn't really make any giant splashes in free agency with the new money. Presently, the Twins have $71MM+ to spend before hitting the luxury tax which has never really been an issue for this team, but still it's there.
On the other hand, they've got a good groove going. Berrios is killing it atop the rotation, is it worth bringing in any controversy surrounding that spot? Do you need a 3-year high level deal for Kimbrel when you're guys are doing okay.
I would step in and argue that Keuchel would be more appealing than Kimbrel. A one-year deal to boost your rotation either at the #1 or #2 spot, he's going to pitch A LOT of innings.
